PiL have now completed the European leg of their 2010 tour. The gigs went down a storm with good reviews continuing from fans and critics alike. The band rounded up the tour with two storming performances at the Electric Picnic Festival in Ireland and the Bingley Live Music Festival in Bradford last weekend.
PiL have mentioned possible recording plans in several press interviews, however, apparently nothing is set in stone just yet, and Virgin Records (EMI) continue to control their back catalogue. All in all its been an exciting 10 month period for PiL fans and long may it continue!
PiLOfficial.Com has also confirmed PiL will NOT cancel their appearance in Israel in August. The band have been receiving hate mate to PiLOfficial.Com and JohnLydon.Com but will not bow to anyone.
“Of course, there are all sorts of terrible politics going on down there but there is just about all over the world. You cannot separate yourself from your audience because of the political powers-that-be. I mean, I'm anti-government—I have been all my life no matter where I go—and I shall be making that loud and clearly proud once I'm in Israel."
"We've received a lot of hate mail, as it happens, going to Israel is some kind of political faux pas. I say, 'Don't be so ignorant -- it's John speaking here and I'm going there to cause trouble and I will do it musically.”

NEW YORK TIMES (Coachella)
“Mr. Lydon’s voice, as strong and cantankerous as ever, was a sneer, a taunt, a howl, a bleat and a cry of pain. His production values were in his hair, spiked skyward, and in the various instruments--including a long-necked electric sax--played by the guitarist Lu Edmonds, who was a member of Public Image Ltd. in the 1980s. …PiL has kept the skeletons of its songs, but it lets Mr. Edmonds and a new rhythm section take them over. Mr. Edmonds likes reverb, leaving fewer stark open spaces, and Middle Eastern music, coming up with modal leads that add a different kind of angularity to the music. Scott Firth on bass and keyboards and Bruce Smith on drums make the beats jauntier than they were in PiL’s old recordings. But Mr. Lydon’s voice is still corrosive, with additional decades of knowing sarcasm. ’Hello, Coachella, I’m a nice fella,’ he rhymed as he introduced ‘Flowers of Romance.’ He ended PiL’s set, which outlasted Jay-Z’s, with ‘Open Up,’ a song he recorded in 1993 as Leftfield Lydon, collaborating with the electronic group Leftfield. ‘Lose yourself inside your schemes/Go for the money, honey,’ he cackled. ‘Burn, Hollywood, burn.’”

“…snarling post-punk pioneers Public Image Ltd. offered a master class in the volatile blend of disco, dub and the avant-garde that informed LCD Soundsystem’s rapturous punk-funk and many of Coachella’s previous breakout bands, such as Bloc Party.”

“… PiL operated amid swirling dark clouds of noise, emphasizing the brooding, uncompromising tone of PiL’s sound. The group’s early signature song, ‘Public Image,’ was not far removed from the raw, straight-ahead rock of the Pistols, but with a guitar sound that became the template for U2’s the Edge and other players. ‘Albatross’ was all post-punk gloom and slicing riffs, while the deep grooves of ‘Religion’ were provocative and riveting…”

“From the set's opening number--the band's biggest hit, 1983's ‘This Is Not A Love Song’--PiL held a firm grasp on the audience's attention with Lydon's spasmodic dancing and monstrous bursts of scream-singing. The band played old songs like ‘Rise,’ ‘Death Disco,’ and ‘Flowers of Romance.’ Edmonds slashed his way through the riff-heavy songs as Firth unleashed hard-hitting baselines on tracks like ‘Sun’ and ‘Warrior.’ …both young music lovers and old school rockers--who danced and moshed, eager to act out the punk days of the past. Coachella fans take note: PiL's performance Friday night at 11:20 PM at the Outdoor Theatre is not to be missed.”

Public Image Ltd North America Tour 2010 Press Release: February, 24th 2010 (courtesy PiLOfficial.Com)
Since returning in December 2009 for seven monumental concerts in the United Kingdom–their first shows in 17 years–PUBLIC IMAGE LTD (PiL) now continue into 2010 with a headlining North American tour starting Saturday, April 17 in San Francisco.
After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd in 1978. With their experimental sound fusing Rock, Dance, Folk, Ballet, Pop and Dub, PiL are regarded as producing some of the most diverse music of the 70s and 80s. As a band, the music and vision constantly evolved like no other, culminating in an incredible live experience.
The North American tour will be preceded by a special performance at the COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL on Friday, April 16 (opening day of the three-day event) in Indio, CA. It marks their first show in the United States in 18 years.
Cited as one of the most innovative and influential bands in music history, PiL return to a country where they enjoyed a special relationship throughout their career for what are set to be stunning shows. The North American dates will be followed by a series of high-profile summer European Festival appearances.
John Lydon, Lu Edmonds, Bruce Smith and Scott Firth earned critical and public acclaim for their concerts in December 2009, with many British media outlets championing them as the shows of the year.
John Lydon: "I sound like a bag of kittens thrown down the staircase."
2010 sees the 30th anniversary of the band’s first U.S. tour and also their U.S TV debut on "American Bandstand," where singer John Lydon invited the audience onstage to dance with the band! Host Dick Clark famously introduced their appearance as "a memorable moment in rock n roll, something special and interesting."
With a wide and varied back catalogue spanning three decades, Public Image Ltd will be showcasing the unique sounds of tracks such as "Public Image," "This Is Not A Love Song," "Rise," and "Disappointed," with many further surprises in store.
Lu Edmonds: Multi instrumentalist and former guitarist in The Damned Lu joined PiL in 1986 recording and playing on the album Happy? and co-writing the album 9 adding yet another dimension to the PiL sound. Lu is also associated with a variety of eclectic and acoustic bands including The Mekons and Siberian band Yat-Kha.
Bruce Smith: Former drummer in The Pop Group and The Slits became percussionist for PiL also in 1986 playing and recording on the albums Happy? and 9. Seen as a drumming virtuoso, Bruce Smith brought his unique style into the fold. Bruce has also played with the likes of Björk and Terence Trent D’Arby.
Scott Firth: A bass player/multi instrumentalist that has collaborated and played with a variety of top musicians and bands including Steve Winwood, John Martyn, Elvis Costello and The Spice Girls. Scott’s arrival into the band in 2009 resulted in John Lydon declaring him "Genius at work!"

Lu Edmond's ESP telecaster guitar that he used on the 2009 PiL tour has been stolen. Lu contacted Fodderstompf with information about the guitar and asked that PiL fans keep an eye out for it and help spread the word... Please email us with any information.
From Lu:
Stolen ESP Telecaster Guitar
I'd like to offer a reward for anyone getting my guitar back to me. It is not a very valuable guitar, in fact it has been so re-modgered over the years that it is in fact unique - and nobody will ever be able to get up onstage and use it without it being clearly clear that it is mine, stolen...
Place of Stealing: out of a Vauxhall car. Wandsworth, London approx 1:30pm on Wednesday 17th February.
Description: ESP telecaster, mushroom colour with red tortoiseshell scratchplate (unusual!)
Block of wood inserted behind the bridge (unusual!)
Fills in where once was a Kahler whammy bar (unusual!)
ESP rubbed out on the neck, but faintly visible if you look (unusual!)
Super-duper custom Australian hand-made pickups (unusual!)
Weird triangular neck profile (unusual!)
Stealer an utter Fekker who wont get a decent price for it as it is such a dog's dinner of a guitar. But... it is my guitar and sounded good with PiL!!!
Help please
Thnx Lu

PiL's pre-Christmas shows proved that John Lydon should not be remembered either as panto punk or eccentric butter salesman, but as arguably Britain's greatest musical adventurer of the last 30 years. By the time this song closed the set at stomach-churning volume, one could only wonder at the extraordinary severity and extremity of his vision. Michael Hann

the band are sounding "absolutely
stunning" and judging
by the live TV performances, and from
John Lydon's recent comments in the press,
these shows are
set to be something very special.
Lu has apparently
stockpiled a variety
of weird and wonderful instruments. Bruce
is sounding rock solid. Apparently Scott
