Ralph
Heibutzki who previously
supplied Fodderstompf with the
1992 interview he did with John
Lydon
– as well as a bunch of Wobble & PiL live reviews (see below)
– has kindly gave us another of his John Lydon interviews. This time
from DISCoveries magazine
in September 1994; on the release of Rotten: No Irish, No Black No Dogs…

Like
countless others – ourselves
included –
James T Macgregor has
been searching for the complete
version of the legendary 'Check
it Out'
appearance (not the 1986 'Tube'
edit). However, unlike
most, James got to watch the
madness unfold on Tyne Tees TV
back in 1979 (he
also says it was later repeated).
At some point
in the future, he would like
to write Fodderstompf a full
article on the show. In the meantime
he's taken the time to correct
a few things and give us some
additional info…
"One
thing that should maybe be corrected
is that it was not Mensi that was
set up to slag off Mr Rotten on
the show, it was in fact the blonde
guitarist of the Angelic Upstarts "Mond" -
he had such pearls of wisdom to
say as "I'm much better
looking than Johnny Rotten" and "he
(rotten) is an old man, he is finished" and he
also spent quite a while singing
the praises of stiff little
fingers. Yes, a bit of a moron
by any account.
My friends and
I were sort of glad that the show
wasnt shown outside the North East
as it was enough to give us Geordies
a bad name! The whole series of
programmes were in fact atrocious
and unwatchable, supposedly aimed
at teenagers. Some years later,
when I was at Tyne Tees on a media
course, I asked a producer (dont
think she was THE producer of the
programme though) about it and
she was very enthusiastic about
it and thought Rotten was great: "He
walked off and sat down on the
ground in the corner of the studio."
Oh,
and despite what may have been
said about the performance being
crap, it was actually amazing;
wish I still had my audio recording
of it which unraveled in a tape
deck some time around the mid 80s…"
Thanks
to James T Macgregor |

Jah
Wobble 'Dan
MacArthur' info corrected
in
Wobble
7" discography.
Below, Karsten
looks at which
other songs on Wobble's 'Betrayal'
album might have been PiL
outtakes?
Karsten:
'Not Another'
and 'Blueberry Hill' are obvious
PIL outtakes. 'Beat the Drum
for Me' was recorded during
the initial 'Metal Box' sessions
with Dave Humphrey on drums, but
was intended as solo material.
I think at least
two more songs
were PIL outtakes:
'Today is the
First Day of the Rest of My Life'
(a.k.a. Seaside Special) and 'Blood
Repression'.
Both were included
on 'VIEP' but
weren't engineered by Mark Lusardi.
Both are similarly produced as
'Beat the Drum for Me'; not as
cheaply as the rest of 'Betrayal'.
Plus, I think it's safe to say
that it's Keith Levene's guitar
on both tracks. 'Today...' sounds
as if it was recorded with a professional
drummer; whereas the drums on 'Blood
Repression' sound like Wobble's or
Levene's (as on the 'Steel Leg'
EP). I think the drums on 'Today...'
sound a lot like Dave Humphrey's…

Freelance

Heibutzki has kindly contributed
PiL gig reviews from:
CHICAGO,
POPLAR CREEK MUSIC THEATER, USA,

Ralph
has also supplied an interesting
interview he conducted with John
Lydon in the lead up to the 1992
show. The interview is possibly
unique from the time; and just goes
to show what happens when you ask
John decent questions…
