Billed by the press an "industrial
supergroup" the Damage Manual featured former PiL bandmates Martin
Atkins (Drums/Production) & Jah Wobble (bass); along with Geordie
Walker (guitar), and Chris Connelly (vocals).
The collaboration came about
when Atkins and Wobble got back in touch during the compiling of 'Plastic
Box'. Atkins suggested he'd send Wobble some tapes to play on. However,
Wobble thought that playing together in a proper working band would be
a better option.
On Wobble's request they recruited
Killing Joke guitarist Geordie Walker; who'd previously worked with Atkins.
Wobble and Walker thought it wouldn't be right if John Lydon wasn't approached
to contribute vocals, but after Atkins sending him some initial demos
they never heard back from him. Chris Connelly, formerly of Ministry,
Finitribe & The Revolting Cocks was then brought in. Again, Connelly
had previously worked with Atkins.
The Damage Manual would release
an EP and CD album before they acrimoniously split; due to increasing
tension between the band and Martin Atkins; particularly over the mixing
of the album. They also toured the UK – even including a
few PiL covers such as 'Poptones' & 'Low Life' – and
were set to tour the US but were refused entry after Visa problems.
The band eventually toured the the States later that year without
Jah Wobble; who had been replaced by Charles Levi.
Atkins and Connelly continued
to perform as The Damage Manual, and released a second studio album in
2005, which does not feature Wobble or Walker in any form (or Keith Levene
for that matter; who had been rumoured to be appearing with the band after
talking about working with Atkins again).
Atkins continues to milk The
Damage Manual back catalogue and has released various remixes projects
from the first album & EP.
